There has been a lot of discussion about bus stop spacing. What do you believe is the ideal amount of spacing between bus stops?

Hello, lots of good conversation so far. I wanted to add something for your consideration.

The two contradictory factors that should be weighed in this conversation are this:
1) How much does wider stop spacing increase bus travel speeds, thereby REDUCING passenger travel time?
2) How much does wider stop spacing increase walking distance, thereby INCREASING passenger travel time?

Remember that, spacing of stops cannot be looked at solely in the context of a given bus line. Most people don't just walk from stop to stop along a bus route, they walk from someplace near the bus stop. That place could be 1-2 blocks or more away from the bus line. The typical pedestrian catchment area around a bus stop is considered to be 1/4 mile.

The ramifications of bus stop removal also need to be considered, for example:
1) If an average of 500 people use a stop in a day, those 500 people will now have to use an adjacent stop, meaning that, adjacent stops will have about 250 more people using those adjacent stops every day (assuming equal stop spacing).
2) No stop should be removed if such removal will result in making the area inaccessible to persons with disabilities.
3) Many stops (especially in the downtown area) currently serve as transfer points between two lines. How do you weigh the impacts and benefits when removing a stop will force people trying to transfer to another line to now have to cross a city street and walk a block to make their transfer?

We are in support of reducing redundancy in stops; however, it is a complicated process that has to be informed by clear goals and analysis of impacts/benefits. I hope to see this discussion continue.
